Theology

You scored as Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan. You are an evangelical in the Wesleyan tradition. You believe that God's grace enables you to choose to believe in him, even though you yourself are totally depraved. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives you assurance of your salvation, and he also enables you to live the life of obedience to which God has called us. Birthday of a King

A little over a year ago, a friend of mine, Patrick*, went along with me to my church's annual Christmas Candlelight service. Before we got out of the car, I told Patrick, "I must warn you; there's this song we always sing and it's not that great. Yet, somehow, we always manage to survive it." Patrick looked at me as though I was insane but it was for his own good. . .

Well, the time came. It was between traditional songs that one would expect and long to hear at a candlelight service. I believe it happened between "O Holy Night" and "Go Tell it on a Mountain." The praise team began, "Birthday of a King."

My Sunday School teacher says it hails from the 1930s, a time when America was suffering the Great Depression. While the lyrics may suggest otherwise, it just seems to require audiences to have prescriptions for Prozac. However, one of our ministers just loves the song.

In the midst of mumbling the words, Patrick leans over and says, "I think this was the song cut from The Sound of Music. I couldn't help but laugh. I wish it was cut from our minister's yuletide repertoire.

Later, my Sunday School class gathered at the nearby Fuddrucker's. We discussed this song and Patrick said, "Well, at least she gave me fair warning."

Here's your chance to know the awe and wonder we experience annually.

Out of the mouths of bears

I have been blessed with family who have, through the years, given me awesome gifts. Once, I woke up on Christmas morning to find a bicycle awaiting me by our tree. It was awesome - it was purple with a banana seat. Later on, my folks got a flag for the back of it. I loved that bike.

Another year, I got the She-Ra castle. The impressive box took up the trunk of the car as we traveled to Corpus Christi for Christmas. While this gargantuan package (bigger than my six year old self) remained unlabeled, I knew it was for me. Nevertheless, I was happy to get the beautiful, cloud-like pink castle.

When cabbage patch dolls were all the rage, I was able to get three. Elena Tracy, Terry Marjorie, and Melanie Celeste are packed away somewhere. I remember requesting that they have green eyes and all the girls do. Terry and Melanie are redheads even.

The only time I was ever denied a desired toy was when I was seven or so. I really wanted a Teddy Ruxpin. I was enthralled by how this bear's mouth was synchronized with little audio tapes. Later on, I wanted to play my M.C. Hammer and Paula Abdul tapes inside this teddy bear just to see what that would be like. Alas, my parents said they could not afford this loquacious bear.

I hadn't really thought of this until I started seeing the TJ FairyTales guy. He talks, too. When I first saw the commercial a couple of weeks ago, all I could imagine TJ saying was "Stop, Hammertime. Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh."

Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Caveat: The title for this entry is, perhaps, a reference that only my coworkers will understand. For anyone who'd appreciate clarification, feel free to email me. :-P

Well, the humble library at which I work has employed a group known formally as the Safety Patrol. This group of fearless student workers can and will escort paranoid employees and patrons to and from their vehicles. The fine folks of Safety Patrol wear "intimidating" neon orange vests over their street clothes. To me, they practically yell, "Hall Monitor" as opposed to "Protector of the Weak and Meek" but I digress. When they are not escorting, members of the Safety Patrol wait in the foyer of various buildings on the campus, including the library.

Among the Safety Patrol are two individuals to whom I will refer to as Dee and Dum. Dee and Dum are a couple of student escorts that are roughly the same size and shape (sort of like Humpty Dumpty). I believe that I, standing five feet eight inches, am taller than both. They don't scare me much. Once, after an incident with a CLG (Creepy Looking Guy or Creepy Library Guy), I actually considered enlisting the help of Dee but she was on her cell phone. So, I bravely managed to find my car without CLG harassment.

Once, one of the directors asked me if I had ever utilized the services of the Safety Patrol. I told him “No, I haven’t.” He asked, “Why not?” I responded, “Well, I’m taller than they are.”
Some of my coworkers let the powers that be know that it was scary coming into the library when having to open it at 6:30 in the morning. Honestly, I prefer the buddy system.

Thus, they assigned this pre-dawn patrol to the ever-popular library fixture of Ed Dominic*. (Ed had been a shelving assistant at the library until he was “relieved of his duties” due to his bossing around of other shelving assistants). Let’s just say Ed is a prize short of a Happy Meal. This is who the police chief determined could walk around with a walkie-talkie, “securing the area” in his official neon orange vest. We’re to call on Ed if we need any help in the morning. Of all people! Well, I must admit that with his black, faux snakeskin boots, and Garth Brooks style cowboy hat, Ed is actually taller than me. Nevertheless, I have opted for the buddy system, asking “Hey, can we walk out together? I feel better going with you than with Ed Dominic.”

As one of my coworkers put it, Ed probably rode the short bus to school. She’d also rather risk her life at the choking hands of a mugger than walk to and from the parking lot with Ed Dominic. If she or anyone else did have Ed accompany them to the parking lot and some unsavory type attacked, Ed would most like run back to the library, yelling “Call 411” into his walkie-talkie instead of the proper “Call 911.”

Can I get some mace? Whether or not I will use it on a would be attacker or the Safety Patrol is another story. . .

Encouragement for Today

Principle 1

"Pardon Me?"
Wendy Pope, Director of Development, Proverbs 31 Speaker Team Member

Key Verse:Matthew 18:21, "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" (NIV)

Devotion:
I have to confess I have never believed that forgiving others is an issue with which I have difficulty. I get upset and angry like most people do when I am wronged; however, I tend to ignore the problem or the person until I "feel" better. Thus, I never really deal with the offense at hand. God has brought me face to face with my naiveté. His desire is to work in and through me to surrender a part of myself that has been displeasing to Him: self-righteousness and an unforgiving spirit. Oh, the lessons I have learned. Oh, the lessons I am still learning.

A circumstance arose between my family and other families on my cul-de-sac. It is a situation I would like to have forgotten but the problem and the persons are not likely to go away. They are all there each time I turn down my street. God has been teaching me about forgiving other, and making me deal with my self-righteousness by having me living right in the middle of my offenders.

I have learned that forgiving others is a choice. There are days when the accusations hurled against me make me burn with anger, and the last thing I want to do is bless those who persecute me. The power of the Holy Spirit living in me enables me to live beyond the anger and bitterness to extend forgiveness. When anger and attitude raise their ugly head, I make the choice to say out loud, "Now Lord, I forgave them already. Help me to live in the forgiveness I have extended." The choice to live in bitterness is mine. The power to make the choice not to live in bitterness comes from God. I am unable to do this apart from Him. The voice of the liar cleverly tries to lure me with memories of the hurt and betrayal I felt. Then I remember his objective for my life is not peace, but pandemonium.

Today's key verse is taken from the parable of the unmerciful servant. Peter wanted to know how many times forgiveness should be offered. Jesus, in true teacher fashion, gave His answer in story form. He goes on tell of a master who forgives a debt that a servant owed him. This same servant refuses to forgive a debt owed him by a fellow servant. Upon learning of this, the master rebukes the servant and turns him over to the jailers to be tortured. Jesus concludes the story by telling Peter, "This is how My Heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." (V35) Frightening isn't?

Are you being tortured by the power of an unforgiving spirit? The good news is forgiveness and freedom is only a prayer away.

My Prayer for Today:
Lord, search my heart today. Bring to my attention anyone I need to forgive. Give me the courage and power to pardon them. I can't wait to live in the freedom forgiveness offers, In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:
Continue today's prayer until God brings someone to your heart. Write the person's name on a piece of paper with the offense. Call the person, forgive him or her, and throw the paper away.

Reflection Points:
Am I living in a state of torment because of unforgiveness?

Have I completely accepted God's gift of forgiveness for my sins?

Do I need to seek forgiveness from someone I have offended?

Power Verses:
Psalm 78:38, "Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath." (NIV)

Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (NIV)

Colossians 3:13 , " Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." (NIV)

We've lost one . . .

Last night, my family received a phone call. We learned that an eighteen year old guy who belonged to our church was killed in a motorcycle accident earlier last evening. He was late to work and trying to make up for lost time. The pavement was wet. Although he was wearing his helmet, he still died.

He had just graduated from high school this past May. He was a beloved son and beloved brother to six boys and girls. He helped his family by working and will be missed by so many people.

I only remember talking to him once - a time when I nearly broke his nose by swinging open a windowless door to our church's office. We exchanged "Excuse me"s and "I'm sorry"s at the time.

While I didn't know him all that well, I still cried. His mother lost a son that had made her very proud.

Thankfully, he was baptised and he had gone on the latest mission trip. Please say a prayer for his family, his friends, and his church.

Also, drive carefully. It's really "better late, than never."

July - It's been real

Life has been both busy and weird. Here are the stats:

  1. My work schedule has had me all over the place. SRP has ended and we signed up over 3500 kids for the program. 200+ will be coming to an ice cream party held in honor of those who read more than 60 books/ more than 30 hours.
  2. While I was at work, a creepy guy in his fifties gave me his phone number and asked me to call him that evening. Friends, e-mail me for the details on this one. Truth is stranger than fiction.
  3. Class goes on for another week or so. So far, I've got an A+ average. Let's keep praying.
  4. I'll have two weeks off from school after next week. Then, I'm taking 6 hours in addition to my full-time work schedule.
  5. My church has gotten itself a new pastor. In the past month, we've had 1 party for the previous minister's wife, 1 Q&A for the future pastor, 1 party for the pastor's who's serving in Costa Rica, and 1 farewell party for the previous pastor and his wife. We've still got a welcome party, fall luncheon, etc etc.

Ben Stein Speaks

My friend Red sent this to me and, rather than forward the awesome message, I choose to post it in my blog. While I am not in 100% agreement with the opinions on spanking, I feel Mr Stein expresses many of my feelings.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary, Sunday, 12/18/05.

Here with at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important?

I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are.

If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.

Next confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu.

If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an
explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.

But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke, it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this Happen?" (Regarding Katrina)

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.

And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"

In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools,and we said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.

Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it...no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don’t sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

12 Hours Down!

As of today, I have finished Telecommunications for Information Professionals. Yea! Now, have 12 hours under my belt and 24 more hours to go. I am a third of the way through the program. Even though I'm working all weekend, I plan to chill until the beginning of the next course - Monday! What a turnaround!

Have a good weekend!

the latest

Just this past week, I have:

1. Turned in an essay
2. Completed a quiz, a news article, and two discussion postings
3. Survived a midterm (I think)
4. Had story time with 47 kids
5. Typed names of SRP participants into an Excel file. Unfortunately, I feel like an Ellis Island official trying to figure out these monikers.
6. Seen over 3000 kids sign up for SRP (that's the population of a 5A school)

It's been lots of fun. Wow, two more weeks and no more Telecommunications course, yea!

MyHeritage.com

I was playing with this relatively new site yesterday. It's MyHeritage.com. The site allows one to upload pictures for facial scans. It looks at the faces in the picture and tells which celebrities look most like the faces in the picture.

I tried many photos of me. Also, I saw the way friends and family resulted. I've come to the following conclusions:

  1. Either my guy friends look feminine or Denise Richards has quite a masculine face. Almost all of the guys looked like her.
  2. This is truly addictive.
  3. I look at people in a different way now.

After numerous scans of scads of photos, I look most like Anne Hathaway, Rachel Bilson, Sofia Coppola, Sally Field, Elizabeth Taylor (the young version), Rose McGowan, and Charlotte Church. Yet, I also looked like Emma Watson, Ingrid Bergman, Isabella Rossalini, Sammi Cheung, Jennifer Connelly, Tata Young, Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys, Eva Mendes, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Jet Li, and Michelle Wie. Isn't it amazing? I also found that my dad and I look more like the same celebrities than my mom and I do. By the way, she looks like Eva Longoria and Angelina Jolie. I certainly missed out on that kind of appeal, didn't I?

Well, when I consider that we're all related to Noah, it makes sense. Besides, it's just the way God packaged us, really.

White-Bread

Earlier today, my friend and I were talking about white-bread. I Wondered (forgive the pun) what this really meant. We're not talking about PB&J sandwiches, here.

Rather, it's a term applied to melanin deficient people like me. Is this correct? Well, I looked to the Oxford English Dictionary. White-bread is " adjective N. Amer. informal bland and unchallenged in a way thought characteristic of the white middle classes." So, I went a little further, because I had looked at a WASPy source. So, I moved onto Wikipedia, where they had a great picture of actual white bread and then the following definition: "Whitebread is also a term, used as a mild pejorative. While the term itself can suggest racist overtones, its most common usage simply refers to blandness or plainness in a person. Its usage is similar to the usage of the term vanilla in this context. In the DC comic book, Justice League International, the sarcastic Green Lantern Guy Gardner would often refer to his innocent, pure-hearted teammate Captain Marvel as 'Captain Whitebread'."

How about a little seasoning? Can I have some garlic butter please?

Writing

God has told me to write. So, I cannot tell you how this will end. . .

For the longest, I have needed to go to the optometrist to have my eyes examined. Things got in the way (i.e. work, school, church, sleep, life, etc.) I guess I didn't want to go since I kept on putting off the inevitable.

Today, I had wanted to go to IKEA. I was going to wear my glasses but it was raining. I didn't want to be wiping my glasses all the time. So, I went to put in my contact lenses. Of course, I tried doing this by the sink in which my makeup sponges were soaking. My left eye lens falls into the sink.

My mom and I looked everywhere in the bathroom for the lens. It was difficult because it's clear and makes no noise. We prayed. I kept promising God I would make an eye appointment. Eventually, I did. Then, Mom found my contact lens. It was in the water that we'd poured into a clear container. I've learned this lesson.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few years ago, a little girl was baptised at my church. She was six years old. Before she was baptised, she read her testimony. She said something along these lines, "I didn't like being alone and I was afraid. But, I'm never alone because I have Jesus. " None of us are ever alone. Even non-Christians aren't alone - God is waiting for them.
May
Here is a recent picture of me. After finishing a semester and making A's in both of my classes, I got to see my friend graduate. It was cool (both the weather and the experience) and I got to see Philadelphia and NYC. May has been a whirlwind for me. I've barely had time to rest. Oh, well.
SRP starts Tuesday. The library should be a popular hang out for the next couple of months. All that free stuff and A/C really brings in the crowds.
In another week or so, I start another class. I'm taking two five week courses. I pray for enlightenment. By the way, I got a summer scholarship. Yippee!
As for social life, it will be in a vegetative state while I work to complete my library degree. In the fall, I'm looking forward to Baylor Homecoming, WOW retreat, and Eva's Graduation. Eva Marie, I'm making those reservations.
A man who would only identify himself as a hitchhiker from New York sits on a street corner, Saturday, April 22, 2006, in the Georgetown section of Washington. The man said lots of people take a look at his sign referring to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and some leave spare change. (AP Photo/Haraz N. Ghanbari)
5 Guilty Pleasures
Thanks, Eva Marie :) .
The Rules: The first player of this game starts with the topic of "5 Guilty Pleasures" and people who get tagged need to write an LJ (or BlogSpot) entry about 5 Guilty Pleasures as well as state this rule clearly. In the end you need to choose 5 people to be tagged and list their names.
Five guilty pleasures: (nothing abnormal)
  1. I like to listen to music sung by singers with not so great sounding voices. God bless her, Janis Joplin is the epitome.
  2. I love to drink Coca-Cola but it has to be so cold it's practically an Icee.
  3. I love the feel of freshly cleaned and dried towels.
  4. I enjoy editing pretty much everything I read. Many don't ask me to glance at their e-mails any more for fear of merciless corrections . . . hehehe.
  5. I love random, trivial facts.
Head Shot
Here is my lovely picture. Since my courses are online and the faculty only sees us at the beginning of the semester, they like to remember us by these nice mugs. It's not so bad, really.
This is the Official Site of JustJorie
Welcome to the world of JustJorie. I've needed to change to a better place for blogging and I think I have found it.
Here's the 411 on me - I am single, white female who graduated from Baylor (Sic 'em, Bears) and has returned to my native land of Houston, Texas. I am several things - a Christian of the Baptist variety, a children's assistant at a local public library, a student in library school, a librarian wannabe, and a great friend and daughter.
I have friends all over the place and I think about them constantly. This nice little corner of cyberspace will, hopefully, keep everyone of them up to date about me.
Please Enjoy.
